How wonderful to have a first ever get together in Montreal.
I wonder if you folks know about a program I have been involved in for several years …….called Encore Creativity for Older Adults. It is the country’s largest singing group for those over age 55. It started in the DC area as part of an experiment to determine if rates of depression, anxiety and etc. are less common among those who participate in the arts. The study ended and the group sings on and grows and grows. There is no audition required. There is also a scholarship fund to increase diversity of economic levels among participants. It now has NY, California, Delaware, Denver, and other branches.
I just returned from a singing performance trip with them in St Thomas, USVI. We had a ball.
The conductors are Young and super well trained professional musicians and conductors. They give us their energy and they get us all to achieve the absolute best that we can. For instance, I usually sing with their Rocks group…..and the conductor is about 37 years old and full of vim, vigor and belief in us.
The conductor in St. Thomas is also young and is a genius of a conductor. He transfers how music affects his entire being, right into us!
We all love to work together and do our best. People actually pay to come hear us, (!)…. or donate, when there is no admission. We have performed in the Kennedy Center and other large halls…………. and we are transported.
I am also proud that the organization provides a chance for those with cognitive impairment to sing with two special groups… those are spreading geographically, as well.
I have made wonderful friends from participating in Encore.
They make us all feel like…..we matter. Not a whole lot of things do, as you know.
Now how great is that??
