“the last form of prejudice available in the liberal sphere”

New York magazine isn’t the first to spoof the famous pregnant-Demi-Moore Vanity Fair cover, but this mom looks more like Helen Mirren and the tag line asks, “Is She Just Too Old for This?” The article is smart and subversive, and I just submitted this Letter to the Editor:

Hats off to Lisa Miller [“Parents of a Certain Age”] for calling out hostility towards menopausal moms for what it is:  ageism, “the last form of prejudice available in the liberal sphere.” Discomfort — as with the fact that the pregnant pinup on your cover looks both ravishing and wrong — is a natural response to social change. But chronological age is not a reliable indicator of ability or appetite, and longer lifespans will make it ever less so.
